Body of Abstract: There is an increasing need for public understanding of science, especially among younger audiences. Science outreach in particular is crucial in empowering school-age children not only to pursue STEM careers, but also to maintain lifelong scientific literacy. This poster summarizes our preparatory work for Elements of Life, a new course for the spring semester of 2024 that is centered on outreach. Enrolled students will read scientific literature surrounding education, communication, and target-grade curriculum in order to develop appropriate hands-on science activities. As part of the Community–Based Learning (CBL) model, groups of students will lead these activities in local public schools. The aim of Elements of Life is to improve the scientific and educational skills of the college students enrolled, while simultaneously supporting the science trajectories of public school students. As Center of Community Engagement (CCE) fellows, we have been developing resources and example activities for Elements of Life. In May 2023 we led a pilot activity with 5th-grade students that provided feedback for the improvement of the community engagement structure and ultimately the science enrichment provided by the course.
