As a plant biologist my passion to improve crop systems drives my research aims. With increased vulnerability to the abiotic and biotic stressors of a shifting climate, it is imperative that we discover, design, and deploy methodologies and technologies to combat these stressors’ effects on crop systems. This not only includes cultivating plant health in terms of crop resilience and resistance, but also food security management and enhanced sustainability in plant production. My specific research interests lie in gene discovery and functional characterization for genetic engineering of agronomic plants. Studies in these fields present opportunities for high-value breakthroughs that can immediately impact plant breeding, farming, and plant products. My graduate research in the Lab of Dr. Simon ‘Niels’ Groen at UCR, is committed to identifying molecular mechanisms that can be used to improve the resilience of rice to root-knot nematode parasitism.
