Based at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Dr. Tello-Ruiz has served as the project manager and lead outreach coordinator for Gramene, the comparative plant genomics and pathways database, since 2012. She is also involved in the Maize NAM pangenome, VitisGen2, and SorghumBase initatives. She holds a BS degree in Biochemical Engineering from ITESM and a PhD in Genetics from SUNY Stony Brook. She trained in population and medical genetics at the Broad Institute of Harvard University and MIT, and has 15 years of experience in bioinformatics. She served as project manager for the Human HapMap Coordinating Center, and coordinated international collaborative efforts for diabetes research. She taught undergraduates for two years at SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Old Westbury, and the Polytechnical Institute of New York University. Currently, she works with Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs) to develop Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) involving community gene annotation.
