I am Natalia Guayazan Palacios, a third year PhD candidate at the University of Washington (UW). I am originally from Bogota, Colombia where I completed my BS and MS at Universidad de Los Andes. I conducted my undegrad and masters research as a member of the Laboratory of Mycology and Plant pathology (LAMFU) led by Dr. Silvia Restrepo. My reserach aimed to understand the infection cycle of the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora betacei causing late blight on tree tomato (Solanum betaceum). From there, I joined the Schornack Lab at The Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University (SLCU) for a summer internship and studied the evolution of plant defenses using Marchantia polymorpha and various fungal and oomycete pathogens as models. For my PhD, I joined Dr. Adam Steinbrenner Lab at UW. My doctoral research focuses on herbivore-specific plant defenses in legumes and the mechanisms that regulate them.
