Supported by NSF, my lab investigates the molecular interactions that allow legumes to sense nodule development and nitrogen status and process that information, resulting in signaling between the root and the shoot to control nodule development. The long distance signaling pathway that is used in AON is not unique to legumes and may help all plants trasmit information between aerial and underground parts. I earned a BS in Biology & Chemsitry (Gordon College) and became a research chemist working on biomimetic materials for the US Army RD&E Center in Natick, MA, prior to entering graduate school. My PhD (Dartmouth College) was supported by an NSF Graduate Fellowship followed by postdoctoral research with Douglas Cook (Texas A&M, now at UC Davis). I became faculty at Clemson in 2000, and have held both faculty and administrative leadership positions.
