Karen was born in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. She is fluent in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Agronomy at the Universidad Autónoma Gabriel René Moreno. She immigrated to the United States to pursue her master’s and Ph.D. at the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville, AR) under the mentorship of Dr. Derrick Oosterhuis and Dr. Kenneth Korth with focusing on plant-insect interactions. After that, she conducted her postdoctoral studies at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research (Ithaca, NY) under the mentorship of Dr. Maria Harrison focusing on the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado. Her research involves tripartite interactions between insects, plants, and beneficial plant-associated soil microbes. She is interested in the changes that occur in plants because of these interactions and how plants allocate their resources toward defense or growth.
