My research interests all center on the connection of cell division processes and cell fate determination—how do specialized cells get made in plants? We use the Arabidopsis stomatal linage (the asymmetric and stem-cell-like population on leaf epidermis) to understand fate determination and cell-cell communication. Stomata, valves on epidermis, are a pivotal adaptation of land plants and control gas exchange. By approaches in computational and system biology, I identified molecular signatures of a rare cell type in leaf. Investigating leaf epidermal development and identifying key players modulating the composition and pattern of the epidermal cells in response to climate change provide a way to understand the developmental plasticity in plants and to offer opportunities for improving plant growth in ever-changing conditions.
