Dr. Varala's research program investigating the regulation of plant metabolism, physiology, and development in response to a changing environment, His research uses interdisciplinary approaches combining cutting-edge molecular (e.g., genome editing through CRISPR) and computational approaches (e.g., big data mining through machine learning). Dr. Varala completed his Ph.D from UIUC in 2011 and his post-doctoral research at NYU. At Purdue University, has built a robust research program that uses genome-scale data to understand gene networks underlying crop traits. The discovery cycle in the Varala lab begins with algorithms that predict the role of a gene or gene network in a trait, tests these predictions in model species in the lab via cutting edge molecular and genetic tools, and then translates them into crop improvement in the field. Dr. Varala has discovered novel transcription factors that regulate traits such as nitrogen use efficiency, cold stress tolerance, and lipid biosynthesis.
