Assistant Professor
University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign
Urbana, Illinois
Steven Burgess is an Assistant Professor in the Plant Biology Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he leads a group that applies approaches from synthetic biology to further understanding of photosynthesis. He received a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Edinburgh, UK, and a PhD in Molecular Biology from Imperial College London, where he investigating solar hydrogen production in the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in the lab of Prof Peter Nixon. Steven then moved to the University of Cambridge for postdoctoral research in the lab of Prof. Julian Hibberd using genomic approaches to investigate evolution of C4 photosynthesis. In 2018 he moved to the Univesity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a Carl R Woese Institute for Genomic Biology postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Prof. Steve Long to work on the Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE) project and joined the faculty at UIUC in 2022.
