Raleigh, North Carolina
Barbara M. Marques, M.Sc in Cell and Molecular Biology, is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Forest Biotech Group, located at NC State University, Raleigh-NC. Barbara has a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) – Brazil, where she also obtained her master's degree. During her period at UFRGS, Barbara developed projects on gene discovery and molecular characterization in pathogenic fungi, which granted her the UFRGS Junior Research Award, 2016. In 2019, she joined the Forest Biotech Group as a graduate student, where she has been deeply involved in the development and optimization of procedures for isolation and delivery of CRISPR-Cas9 complexes in protoplasts to enable transgene-free genome editing in coniferous, and hardwood tree species. Barbara also contributed to the recent Science AAAS publication “Multiplex CRISPR Editing of Wood for Sustainable Fiber Production”.
