Clara Stanschewski is a PhD candidate in the lab of Prof. Mark Tester in the Centre for Desert Agriculture at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST, Saudi Arabia). She is driven by her motivation to contribute to efforts towards food security, one of the many challenges that are intensified by climate change. Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is a minor crop with great potential for expansion of cultivation into areas currently unavailable for agriculture due to a large natural diversity and natural tolerance to various adverse environmental conditions, including a high natural salinity tolerance. In the scope of improving the crop further, Clara is investigating the genetic architecture of agronomically important traits in quinoa using comprehensive phenotyping and Genome-Wide Association Studies.
