Janet Jansson, PhD, is Chief Scientist (Emeritus) and Laboratory Fellow at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). She uses molecular tools “omics” to study microbial community interactions. She Her research aims to study the impact of climate change on soil microbial communities, including a focus on soil microbiomes in thawing permafrost and in grassland ecosystems. She is also working with NASA to study how soil microorganisms interact in space compared to Earth. Jansson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, the Washington State Academy of Science and AAAS. She has authored more than 250 publications and has been on the list of most highly cited researchers in the world for the past 4 out of 5 years. In addition, she is Past President of the International Society for Microbiology (ISME).
