Body of Abstract: Pomegranates, commonly known for their seeds and juice, have also been tested for the potential beneficial effects of their peels, which are usually discarded as waste. Previous studies have shown that pomegranate peels have antibacterial metabolites, which have the potential to be used in supplements and other products (Fawole et al., 2012). To investigate the antimicrobial compounds found in pomegranate peels, I will measure the metabolic compounds from the US-grown ‘Wonderful’ cultivar and an emerging cultivar ‘Parfianka’. The metabolites from pomegranate extracts will be quantified using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS). Spectra from the two different cultivars will be compared for similarities and differences. These results will provide a better understanding of the metabolic compounds found in pomegranate peels used in the commercial market, and add to the growing knowledge and awareness surrounding pomegranates.
