Workshop Description: Concise, impactful presentation is a key skill for scientists at all levels. The Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition would be hosted on Plenary Stage during the 2023 Plant Biology Meeting. This competition would consist of finalists from a virtual entry period from March to May 2023. Presentations must be no longer than three minutes and contain only a single slide or other prop for visual context. 3MT presentations are judged primarily on the ability of the contestant to communicate their ideas enthusiastically to a non-scientific audience. Participants in the virtual competition will record their 3MT presentation and upload them to YouTube prior to the submission deadline in May 2022, after which 5 finalists will be selected to give their presentation live during the annual Plant Biology Meeting. The event organizers will select the finalists from the virtual competition and a panel of 3 judges will select the grand prize winner during the annual meeting. Judges will initially score presentations on communication effectiveness, scientific content, and originality using a rubric. The judges will then discuss amongst themselves a final ranking. The People’s Choice award winner will be selected via audience poll and given to the participant with the most votes, unless that participant is the grand prize winner, in which case the award will be given to the participant with the second most votes. To emphasize that this competition is meant to highlight science communication skills, the panel of judges will include individuals without research backgrounds.
Learning Objectives:
Identify presentation elements and styles that are conducive to effective delivery.
Refine presentation skills in a realistic setting.
